How's Your Employee Engagement?
Employee Engagement in the Remote Workplace
Whether you love it or hate it, the working world has gone online. For those companies fortunate enough to be able to take their operations virtual, it’s a dramatically different paradigm. While the ability to work remotely is a huge advantage right now, there’s a very real possibility that your employees will become disengaged from the company’s mission and from one another.
The good news is that your virtual office doesn’t have to become a lonely, isolated landscape. There are simple ways—and excellent tools—for staying connected with your team. Learn how you can stick together even when you’re apart.
The following advice comes from an interview with engagement expert Dave Will, founder of PropFuel, on how business owners can keep their teams active and excited while working from home.
Communicate often.
If you think you’re overdoing the communication, you’re probably doing enough. Transparency is crucial right now. People are scared and there’s a lot of uncertainty in the world, both healthwise and economic. If your team understands where the company’s at and why leadership is making certain decisions, it helps them feel some measure of control.
Put in face to face time.
One of the best lessons leaders are learning from this crisis. Dave and I talked about my own personal shift in this area. The internal operations of my companies were already mostly remote before COVID-19: I talked to people on the phone and emailed with them, but I often didn’t see my employees in person between EOS® quarterly sessions. In the last 6 weeks, we’ve really leaned into Zoom, and that face to face interaction has actually deepened our relationships. Seeing someone’s face is reassuring, humanizing, and, frankly, more fun.
Help your team prioritize.
Employees may have extenuating circumstances at home (childcare, managing kids’ education, being caregiver for a sick or elderly family member) that might limit their capacity or bandwidth right now. Aside from being compassionate, help each person understand what they absolutely need to get done—and which assignments are less crucial to core functions of the company.
Find out what employees are thinking.
Get a tool that gives you measurable results when it comes to employee engagement and satisfaction (incidentally, putting this system in place lets you check box #17 on the EOS Organizational Checkup). A good tool should be easy to use, provide quantifiable data, and promote peer to peer recognition.
To that end: there are a lot of tools available for employee and customer engagement. You can create an internal system for free or use a third-party solution. What matters to us is that you’re consistently using a system or software that works for you.
If you want an easy to use platform that’s built for measuring (yeah—finally a way to measure both employee and client NPS!) and fostering employee engagement and interaction, we recommend PropFuel. Dave has worked with our team to develop a fully customizable platform that connects your team, gives you great insights, and makes work more fun.
